We are in week 8 of our 12-week on-line study forum.

How is everyone feeling?  Operations is a large part of the test and we are now in the 3rd week of covering Operations topics.  As with any of the sections, if you have questions, feel free to either post them here or reach out to a member of the COPM Committee.  We would be more than happy to help you.  

 

Let's talk about Ancillary Services.

There are three broad categories of Ancillary Services – diagnostic (an example would be an x ray), therapeutic (and example would be physical therapy) and custodial (nursing homes would be an example of custodial).

 

Ancillary services can be located in hospitals, medical offices and free-standing sites. The following are examples of ancillary services found in ENT offices:  audiology, hearing aid sales, aesthetician services, ambulatory surgery center, radiology/CT services, sleep centers, allergy services.  This is not a comprehensive list…just some examples.

 

Before adding (or even considering adding) ancillary services in your practice, you would want to do a thorough needs assessment including market analysis and return on investment evaluation.  You also need to look into any accreditation requirements and potential legal issues.

Another important aspect of operations is the revenue cycle. Here are some things you should be aware of.....

Are you familiar with basic coding terminology, modifiers and know what documentation is required to code various office visit levels?
Be familiar with the difference between a CPT code, ICD-9 and ICD-10.
Do you understand how to calculate days in accounts receivable?
Do you know about insurance authorizations, denials and the appeals process?
Do you know where you would get current updates regarding various insurance plan policies?

Do you know the most common modifiers?
Some modifiers include:
22 -unusual procedural services
50 -bilateral procedure
51 –multiple procedures
80 -assistant surgeon
