Happy Monday everyone. This week starts our review of IT and just to clarify, we don't expect anyone to be able to write programs. What we will be asking is if you are familiar with the different aspects of IT whether it be your computer systems-telephone systems--anything that falls under the IT umbrella.

Are you familiar with what VOIP is and how it functions? What type of connectivity is used between office locations? Are you familiar with T1 lines versus fiber? Do you know what an IP address is and where to find it on your computer or server? What about your security systems for IT?

These are just a few of the things we will be discussing this week and there will be additional information posted this afternoon.

The resource manual is great for review as it lists your most commonly used terms-in addition to a few listed above---are you familiar with :"cloud" Computing? Seems as if many of us are using these terms daily, we just don't always realize it. Take a look and refresh your memory on some of the terms such as DNA which stands for Domain Name System and it is this which keeps us from having to remember the IP address of every site we wish to visit.

So just take a look and review the commonly used technology terminology. If you don't have access to the resource manual you might consider it or let me know and I can put a list out there for you to look at and look up.

Coming also will be hardware and software terminology, Networking, communications, telecommunications, telemedicine, EMR/EHR and disaster recovery.

Continuing on with IT--as with the basic terminology give yourself a review of the terms for Hardware and Software. As technology changes so quickly and we try to budget each year for our needs we should be aware of the current terms to make sure we don't get something that will be obsolete quickly. For Hardware familiarize yourself with Optical Disks, CD-Rom, CD-RW, DVD, RAM, ROM

For Software know about the basic three--Operating Systems----Applications and Utilities
Operating systems vary but most administrators should be familiar with Microsoft Windows and the different operating systems offered. Your applications refer to what you use daily such as Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and any other applications you may use in your practice. Try to familiarize
yourself with the basics. Utilities are always fun--think of them as the program that performs a specific task, usually for your system resources such as managing your disc drives, printers, etc

Review Networking---how do you connect your computers in the office? Do you network to remote locations? Are you familiar with routers, gateways and switches, at least know the basics that they are used to connect networks? Do you have employees who have remote access and use one of the
remote access options such as RAS--remote access server VPN-virtual private networking?

some things to think about and will add more today

And of course we have our security and confidentiality for our systems--firewalls to keep people out---hardrives that can keep your data secure from loss during operations--

When you think about it we deal with all of the IT issues every day. We know a lot about the different terms, how it works, security we need. Questions on IT can be related to terminology so knowing the different terms is really helpful.

Telemedicine falls under the IT umbrella as it is the technology that makes it work. Telemedicine makes it possible for patients in remote locations to visit via live video with specialists--send test results for consultations--or the patient, their provider and a specialist can all confer via live video for immediate results. Their are different uses for telemedicine and it not just for remote locations but that is one of the common benefits for its use. It can be used for direct supervision of a non-MD such as PA or NP.
when you attend live educational courses this is also a use for this technology.
