Hope everyone is at least having a pretty good Monday. This week we are going to go over Operations again, specifically Medical Records Retention----coding--mostly basic so you don't have to have a CPC but what a manager would need to know

This section of the resource manual also contains ICD-9 which of course we all know is ICD-10 now---it didn't go away as we knew it wouldn't. The timelines included in the manual are incorrect of course as they kept getting pushed back but the items covered are still intact so we will go through this together.

Modifiers

One of our favorites----revenue cycle management

compliance---all types just not HIPAA

and one that seems to be more important that ever--Risk Management

as we go through these topics make notes of things that you may not be as familiar with and either send in a question, give us a call or surf the net for answers. This is just a really good time to see if you are comfortable in this area. We can't cover it all but what we usually find is that as we learn one new thing another area pops up that we start researching.

As you are all obviously "life long learners" we are so glad you are taking the assessment or at least considering the idea.

Medical Records Retention: This of course is going to vary by state but for the purpose of the assessment the questions will be asked on a "FEDERAL" level so keep that in mind as you go. Personally this section is where I took the time to review my states laws also and really did a review on Federal as I was more concerned with state regulations.

One major issue to remember about medical records retention----it isn't just your office's patient records that you need to know the rules on----OSHA as it pertains to any injury of an employee----HIPAA has it's own requirement and if Federal doesn't mention it---check with your state medical associations.

Billing records fall under the retention issue also from a patient care standpoint----so review regs on that also. Your malpractice carrier is a really good source of information on medical records.

so:

The retention requirement for HIPAA privacy regulations is:
A: 10 years
B: 7 years
C: 6 years
D: 5 years

Answer tomorrow and we will start on some coding and modifiers
