This day almost got away from me. I am researching some info on compliance for tomorrow so thought we would go with Risk Management today. This area is becoming more and more important to all of us.

Risk Management as it pertains to patients includes Patient Safety--Quality Assurance and Patient Rights and of course--Medical Malpractice.

Risk management is not just about medical malpractice although that this the first thing that comes to mind----we also have to be mindful about safety within our offices----making sure that the office itself is clean and clear for our patients----you do not want a patient to slip and fall, catch their foot on the carpet or rug, resulting in an injury for which your practice would be liable.

Have every member of your staff keep an eye out for objects dropped on the floor accidentally, any spills, etc., from some of your younger patients in the waiting room, hallways or examination rooms.

Online you will find many Checklists which are beneficial---once such checklist is the Safety Walk Around Checklist for Physician Office Practices

It includes such things as Grounds and Parking areas if that pertains to your practice-if you own or lease the building and parking areas

Office settings---waiting areas, no confidential information visible and more

Exam Rooms--clean? No hazardous products accessible to patients, patients chairs in good condition etc

Preventative maintenance logs, electrical cords, elecrical outlets

these are just a few of the things included in risk management

I kind of rambled along there in between interruptions in the office as we all have--on risk management as it pertains to malpractice: Malpractice is professional negligence by act or omision by a health care provider. Providers obtain malpractice insurance to offset the risk of a claim

do you know the difference between claims made and occurence made insurance?
do you know which one will cover the claim regardless of the date it was filed?
are you familiar with the term "tail coverage" and when it comes into play?

we will go over more tomorrow as a lot of compliance issues cross over into the risk management area
